Aston Villa agree deal to sign out-of-favour Chelsea defender for £35million

Aston Villa have reportedly agreed to sign Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for a fee in excess of £35million.

Maatsen failed to get first team opportunity under Mauricio Pochettino last season and was eventually loaned out to Borussia Dortmund to spend the second half of the season.

His impressive performance for Dortmund helped the Bundesliga side reach the Champions League final where they were defeated by Real Madrid.

Reports from The Athletic has now claimed the 22-year-old is on the verge of joining Aston Villa on a six-year contract.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano also revealed that Aston Villa are ‘confident’ to get the deal signed by the end of the week.

Chelsea have already given the green light for the transfer. The two teams are also in discussion about including a player in the deal, which is not guaranteed to be Jhon Duran, despite their interest.

Maatsen is currently away on international duty after being drafted in to the Netherlands’ EURO 2024 squad.

The Netherland international played 12 league games for Chelsea last season, having enjoyed loan spells away from Stamford Bridge.

Aside from Dortmund where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season, he’s also been on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley.

Chelsea are looking to sell some players this summer so as to meet up with Premier League profit and sustainability regulations. Maatsen will be the first of many to come.
