Chelsea launch bid for European football with emphatic victory over Tottenham

Chelsea produced a brilliant display in front of their home fans on Thursday night to defeat Tottenham Hotspur who might lose out of European football next season.

Despite failing to convince fans with their performances every week, Chelsea proved they might have a stake in Europe next season with a derby day win.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side claimed a first win since thrashing Everton almost three weeks ago and reignites their hopes of creeping into the top seven.

Trevoh Chalobah headed Chelsea into the lead midway through the first half. Though the goal required a long VAR check, Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea fans were pleased when the result was in their favour.

Nicolas Jackson doubled Chelsea’s as the clock ticked into the final 20 minutes, converting the rebound when Cole Palmer’s free-kick came back off the bar.

Jackson’s record against Spurs since moving to England has been excellent. Mauricio Pochettino also have some youngsters the opportunity to prove themselves on the big stage.

A late injury to Alfie Gilchrist allowed another academy graduate – 17-year-old Josh Acheampong – to come on for his senior debut.

Chelsea now have two full days to recover before another London derby with the team they have just leapfrogged, hosting West Ham on May 5.
