Chelsea part ways with Mauricio Pochettino after one season

Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Mauricio Pochettino as their manager after just one season in charge of the London club.

Mauricio Pochettino joined Chelsea ahead of the 2023/24 season but led the Blues to a sixth place finish in the Premier League. In the process, Chelsea missed out on Champions League qualification and endured a trophyless season.

Though there has been speculations about Pochettino’s future, Chelsea confirm that the Argentine leaves the club with immediate effect.

Directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we’d like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He’ll be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career”.

Mauricio Pochettino also took to social media to speak about the latest development, thanking Chelsea owners and fans for the months spent together.

Pochettino said: “Thank you to Chelsea ownership group and Sporting Directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club’s history”.

“The Club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come”.

Chelsea lost the League Cup final 1-0 to Liverpool after extra-time and pushed Manchester City all the way before losing in the FA Cup semi-finals by the same score.

But there had been signs that Pochettino’s project was coming together in a run of five consecutive wins to end the season that ensured Chelsea will be in Europe next season.

Chelsea will qualify for the Europa League if Manchester United lose to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25 and the Conference League if the Red Devils shock the English champions.
