Chelsea star signs new contract amidst departure rumours

Chelsea forward Sam Kerr has signed a contract extension at Stamford Bridge just days after teasing the club fans of a possible departure.

Kerr joined Chelsea midway through the 2019-20 season and has grown to become one of best female players in football history.

The Australian captain has become famous for her goalscoring attributes, scoring 99 goals in 128 appearances for the club. Kerr has also helped Chelsea win a record five Women’s Super League titles on the bounce under former boss Emma Hayes.

Kerr has also helped Chelsea to three Women’s FA Cup titles and two League Cup finals, as well as reaching the Champions League final in 2020-21.

On the new contract, Kerr said: “Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me. I’m really excited to continue to push and to try to win trophies.”

General manager Paul Green added: “We are delighted that Sam has extended her deal with the club. Sam is a leader and one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers. She has been very important to our success, and we look forward to welcoming her back from injury next season.”

To announce the latest development, Chelsea teased fans in the minutes confirming the news with a short clip of Kerr seemingly suggesting she might be departing the club.

In a video posted to social media, Kerr said: “I didn’t know how to have this conversation with you guys, but I think it’s just best saying it.

“After four years, it’s really hard to sum up how I feel. My time at Chelsea has been unforgettable, lots of great memories made, lifelong dreams, winning trophies.

Kerr has also won the WSL’s Golden Boot twice and finished in the top three of Ballon d’Or rankings for three successive years.
