Chelsea wins 5th successive WSL title as Emma Hayes ends reign in style

Chelsea clinched their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) title on Saturday after an emphatic 6-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Going into the match, Chelsea women’s team were level on point with Manchester City women’s team and both teams needed a win to stand any chance.

City needed to beat Aston Villa by a margin of at least three goals to stand any chance of winning their first league title since 2016 while Chelsea needed to score more goals.

Chelsea were in high spirit as they raced into a two-goal lead within eight minutes and were 4-0 up by half-time at Old Trafford.

City beat Villa 2-1 to finish the season level with Chelsea’s 55 points, but their goal difference of 46 was inferior to Chelsea’s by seven.

Chelsea’s victory ensured that head coach Emma Hayes ended her 12-year reign at the club in style. She will be leaving Chelsea to join the United States Women national team.
