Dortmund’s pursuit of Ian Maatsen suffer huge blow due to Chelsea clause

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen is willing to quit Stamford Bridge this summer as he seeks a permanent move to Borussia Dortmund.

Ian Maatsen failed to play regularly under Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea and he decided to try a new adventure by moving on loan to Dortmund during the January transfer window.

His loan spell was a success as he played a huge role in Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final.

With Dortmund willing to make his loan move permanent, Chelsea’s clause in the young Dutch defender contract might block the move.

According to the Daily Mail, any club is able to activate that clause in question, rather than just the Bundesliga giants.

That leaves Maatsen open to offers ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening later this month, teams aware that Chelsea will be prepared to entertain talks as soon as possible.

However, the report added that Dortmund remain the favourites and are eager to retain Maatsen’s services.

Maatsen currently has a £35m release clause in his contract and Chelsea would naturally be the big winners from this scenario if any club agrees to pay such fee.

The Dutchman during his loan spell at Dortmund made 22 starts and one substitute outing in all competitions. Seven of those starts came in the Champions League as Dortmund reached the final before losing to Real Madrid on Saturday evening.
