‘No Way back’: Erik ten Hag calls for VAR change after Wolverhampton’s motion

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has called for improvement in the usage of VAR as he insists that the technology will not be scrapped.

VAR has come under heavy criticism this season with some clubs skeptical of its usage by officials.

Wolverhampton Wanderers submitted a motion to scrap the controversial video aid for referees and Premier League clubs are set to hold a discussion and a vote at their annual general meeting on June 6.

Ahead of what is expected to be a big day in Premier League football, Ten Hag believes VAR won’t be scrapped.

“I don’t think there is a way back, in principle it makes football more fair, but there are some problems, we have to find the solutions to these problems, make improvements,” he said.

Manchester United are expected to vote against the motion raised by Wolves with Liverpool also expected to follow suit.

Premier League have also back the technology and hope to improve its usage. The league recently voted to introduce semi-automated offsides from the 2024/25 season.

Referees are also expected to announce VAR decisions via the public system from next season.

VAR was first introduced for the 2019/20 season and has been in existence since then. The latest motion raised by Wolves will need at least 14 clubs to be in favour to pass.
