Man United consider bid for Bayern Munich central defender Matthijs de Ligt

Premier League giant Manchester United are considering a move for the Bayern Munich centre-half Matthijs de Ligt.

Manchester United are currently in the transfer window for a new center back after Raphael Varane was allowed to leave following the expiration of his contract.

Though the Red Devils are linked with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, report claimed Man United are ideally looking to recruit two central defenders this summer.

De Ligt, 24, has been on United’s radar for years and played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax. He has been identified as a perfect fit for the team.

It is thought De Ligt would cost considerably less than the £65 million fee the German club paid Juventus for the player in 2022. He had previously joined the Italian club from Ajax for £68 million.

Bayern Munich are looking at replacing De Ligt due to his constant injury problems. The Bundesliga side are interested in signing the Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo.

The Netherlands international, currently competing at Euro 2024 with his country, has three years left on his existing contract at Bayern. United are yet to open formal discussions with Bayern but have been alerted to De Ligt’s potential availability.

Aside from De Ligt, Branthwaite remains a leading target but United had an opening offer worth £43 million including add-ons rejected for the England defender.

Everton are holding out for at least £70 million which United have no intention of playing.

United had wanted to bid for Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo but have been blocked from doing so under Uefa’s new rules governing multi-club ownership.
