‘You need match winners’: Chelsea urged not to sign Spanish star

Former Chelsea and England defender Glen Johnson has urged the club new manager Enzo Maresca to stay away from signing Nico Williams.

Chelsea are currently active in the transfer window. The London club have been linked with various players including Nico Williams.

The Athletic Bilbao forward has impressed for Spain at Euro 2024 this summer, and after an impressive stint with the Basque side in La Liga, he is being linked with a move away before the new season.

With Chelsea amongst the club reportedly interested in him, Johnson thinks that the Blues already have enough players who can perform the same role.

He told Betfred: “From what I’ve seen, he’s probably better than a few they’ve already got.

“As I’ve said before, Chelsea have so many youngsters and I believe they need more experience in the team. They need match winners and experienced players rather than an entire squad of young gems.

‘I don’t believe they need another young winger right now.

“Chelsea need players that have been around the Premier League for many years, that have won trophies and know how to win. I think they’re already maxed out with youngsters if I’m being completely honest.”

Enzo Maresca will take charge as Chelsea boss next season with the blues expected to compete for all trophies after failing to secure Champions League football last season.
